AUVSI Congratulates FAA on BEYOND Program

AUVSI Is Looking Forward To Working With The FAA And Industry On The Effort To Collect UAS Operation Data

AUVSI has applauded the DOT and FAA, as well as all the program participants, for a successful unmanned aerial systems (UAS) Integration Pilot Program (IPP).

"With (their) announcement of the BEYOND program, building upon the lessons learned in the IPP, AUVSI is confident that the building blocks for continued UAS integration are falling into place. With the Remote ID rule now at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and the BEYOND program’s focus on more complex UAS operation under established rules rather than waivers, the UAS industry is at a watershed moment in time.

The industry is poised for significant growth, and AUVSI will be working closely with our members and government stakeholders to ensure that the full potential of UAS technology is realized in the marketplace.

In particular, AUVSI is looking forward to working with the FAA and industry on the effort to collect UAS operation data to develop performance-based standards. We applaud the FAA’s stated performance-based approach, and strongly agree that it is the best path forward to allow for innovation and market growth."

The FAA is tackling the remaining challenges of UAS integration through a new program called BEYOND.

These challenge areas are:

  • Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations that are repeatable, scalable and economically viable with specific emphasis on infrastructure inspection, public operations and small package delivery.
  • Leveraging industry operations to better analyze and quantify the societal and economic benefits of UAS operations.
  • Focusing on community engagement efforts to collect, analyze and address community concerns.

The BEYOND program started on October 26, 2020 to continue the partnerships with eight of the nine IPP participants.
