Investigators Focus On Fuel In Sicily Mishap

ATR-72's Tanks May Have Been Contaminated -- Or Empty

Investigators probing Saturday's ditching of a chartered ATR-72 off the coast of Sicily are looking into the possibility the plane's fuel supply might have been tainted -- or non-existant at the time of the mishap.

"The plane's fuel could have run out," Vito Riggio told the AP. He's the head of Italy's civil aviation agency, ENAC.

The Tuniter charter flight went down in the rough waters of the Mediterranian Saturday, killing 13 of the 36 people on board. Three people are still missing, according to local authoritie4s. The ATR-72 (file photo of type, right) carried vacationers bound for Djerba, Tunisia.

Survivors told Riggio's investigative team they heard the engines fall silent just before the aircraft impacted the water about ten miles off the Sicilian coast. Riggio said he was looking at the possibility the pilot simply failed to verify he had sufficient fuel on board before starting his flight.
