EADS Offers Incentives To South Korea In Fighter Competition

Eurofighter Typhoon Competing With F-35, F-15 Silent Eagle

EADS has reportedly offered the South Korean government a $2 billion incentive package as it seeks to win a contract for 60 advanced fighter planes. The company would offer assistance to the country for the development of an indigenous fighter if it selects the Eurofighter Typhoon for the program.

The French news service AFP reports that the other planes under consideration are the F-35 and the F-15 Silent Eagle. A decision is expected to be announced by the end of June.

Long a U.S. ally, South Korea has traditionally looked to the U.S. for its military aircraft. But in January, AgustaWestland beat out Sikorsky for a helicopter contract with the South Korean Navy.

EADS would reportedly invest in South Korea's KF-X program, and has promised that 53 of the 60 Eurofighters would be assembled in Korea if the contract goes their way.

The KF-X program is designed to develop an indigenous South-Korean multi-role fighter.
