USS Carl Vinson F/A-18s Strike Insurgents in Iraq

Strike fighter aircraft from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9, flying from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) in the Persian Gulf, attacked an enemy insurgent location east of Baghdad, Iraq, April 4.

F/A-18 Hornets from Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 154 and 147 dropped two 500-pound laser-guided bombs, striking the enemy position in support of Iraqi and coalition forces.

Carl Vinson deployed with four Hornet squadrons, including the Black Knights of VFA-154 and the Argonauts of VFA-147, both based at Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif.

Aircraft from CVW-9 are currently providing close air support and conducting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions in ongoing operations in support of Multi-National Forces - Iraq and forces from the sovereign government of Iraq.

The aircraft involved in Monday’s strike returned safely to Carl Vinson, currently the only U.S. aircraft carrier on station in the Persian Gulf.
