AeroSports Update: AirVenture 2015 NOTAM Now Available

Special Air Traffic Procedures Are Required Reading For All Aviators Flying To AirVenture

The FAA has released the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2015 Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), featuring arrival and departure procedures for EAA’s annual AirVenture fly-in convention being held July 20-26 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

The NOTAM, which is in effect 6 a.m. CDT July 17 to noon CDT July 27, 2015, outlines procedures for the many types of aircraft that fly to Oshkosh for the event, as well as aircraft that land at nearby airports.

Download a PDF version of the NOTAM or request a free printed copy by calling EAA Membership Services at 800-564-6322. (Online ordering will be available soon.) Printed copies will be mailed after the FAA completes printing the NOTAM, which is anticipated in May.

While the overall procedure is similar to past years, there are some changes compared to the 2014 version. Some of those changes include:

  • MOA active in central Wisconsin
  • TFRs near Milwaukee, July 25-26
  • Fisk VFR arrival description
  • Communication frequency updates
  • IFR departure routings

For a recreational flyer, flying into Wittman Regional Airport during EAA AirVenture is part of the adventure. You’ll probably hear some wild stories about the arrival and departure procedures but if you are prepared it’s a lot of fun. Here’s a few hints to help make things smoother for your trip to AirVenture 2015.

The NOTAM for this event is so extensive that it is not issued by flight service over the phone. At first, the sheer size of the NOTAM seems daunting but that’s only because it applies to everything from ultralights arrivals, to warbirds, to instrument approaches.

Here’s some hints for using the NOTAM: Section out the pages that don’t apply to you and assemble a binder of the pages that do apply. Highlighting the key parts of the diagrams helps. Each diagram contains radio frequency information. Consider transposing this to a quick reference card that fits in your shirt pocket. Get organized. Review the other sections of the NOTAM to see how other patterns interface with yours.

The excitement is about to begin and we at ANN will be providing additional information and hints about flying into AirVenture in AeroSports Updates as we get closer to the big event.
