D-Day: The Israeli Connection

French Use Israeli UAV To Patrol The Skies Over Normandy

As leaders from throughout Europe and North America converged on Normandy, France, for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, an Israeli drone buzzed high in the sky, on the alert for terror attacks. Flown by the French Army, the Israeli Aircraft Industries Hunter drone was an integral part of the tightest security Europe has seen since the end of the war in 1945.

The French Army has been operating Hunter drones for several years, according to the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot. Happy with the performance so far, French authorities had no reservations about using the Hunter again.

But it wasn't the first time the French have turned to Israeli UAV technology for security during high-profile events.

Colonel Marc Timbert, commander of the French Army UAV unit, said the Israeli Hunter UAV was also used at the G8 conference in Evian last year, helping to spot illegal demonstrators.
