Air Force Finds Error In GPS Software

Accuracy Of GPS Signals Not Affected, USAF Says

The U.S. Air Force has uncovered an apparent glitch in the ground-based software for some of Boeing's GPS satellites, though the Air Force Space Command said that the problem was not affecting the accuracy of the signal coming from the Boeing-built IIF spacecraft.

While the problem appeared to be on the ground, Reuters reports that officials are looking at other potential causes.

The glitch apparently has gone unnoticed since 2013, according to the report. It has been traced to ground-based software that builds and transmits messages to the spacecraft. Those messages apparently do not meet U.S. technical specifications in some instances.

Boeing officials had no comment, according to the report. Nor did Lockheed Martin, which has responsibility for ground control of the spacecraft.

The Air Force said a temporary fix had been implemented while a permanent solution was being developed.
