Two Survived The Accident At Thomson-McDuffie County Airport Near Augusta
A Hawker Beechcraft 390/Premier I business jet appeared to overrun the end of the runway at Thomson-McDuffie County Airport Near Augusta, GA, Wednesday night resulting in the fatal injury of five of the people on board the airplane. There were two survivors, one of whom is said to be the pilot.
The accident reportedly occurred about 2030 EST Wednesday, according to a report from the Associated Press. The flight had originated at John Tune Airport in Nashville, TN. FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergan said in an e-mail that the airplane was registered to a company based in Wilmington, DE.
The survivors were taken to area hospitals with unspecified injuries. The names of those fatally injured are being withheld pending notification of relatives.
An ANN reader in Augusta sent an e-mail saying that according to information he had been able to gather, the airplane was landing on Runway 10 and was apparently too fast. It was reportedly attempting a go-around when it clipped some power lines. That information is not confirmed.
The NTSB issued a news release late Wednesday indicating it had dispatched a "Go" team to Augusta to begin the investigation. Senior Aviation Investigator Ralph Hicks will serve as the Investigator-in-Charge. Board Member Robert Sumwalt is traveling with the team and will serve as the principal on-scene spokesman. Public Affairs Officer Terry Williams is also accompanying the team.
