Elderly Woman Delays Chinese Airline Flight For Hours

Tossed Coins Into An Engine To Ensure 'Good Luck' On The Flight

Sometimes people with the best of intentions can throw a monkey wrench into the works.

In the case of a recent China Southern Airlines flight scheduled to fly from from Shanghai to Guangzhou, the wrench took the form of a handful of coins allegedly tossed by an elderly woman boarding the flight on air stairs into the engine for "good luck," according to a report from the South China Morning Post.

The flight was delayed at Shanghai Pudong International Airport while mechanics tore down the engine and cleared the coins from it.

Passengers boarding the flight say they saw the woman throwing coins at the engine for "blessings" while boarding, and alerted the crew.

The woman is reported to be about 80 years old and was accompanied by her husband, daughter and son-in-law. Nine coins were found in the engine, according to the report.

The airplane was finally cleared to fly more than five hours after the original departure time.
