National Air Tour Starts, Flies Over Meigs

Friends of the Late Meigs Field Have Friends in Vintage Community, Too

The National Air Tour started on Monday, and visited the Chicago area Monday afternoon; the participants plan a special flyover today (Tuesday).

Having stopped overnight in Lansing (IL) on Monday, the tour was originally scheduled to stop in Chicago at Meigs Field today. Now, with the runway in a dangerous shambles, the tour will bypass Chicago, but will fly over the famous-but-vandalized airfield in a show of support.

Pilots of 25 museum-quality historic aircraft from the 1920s and 30s will stop in 26 cities, recreating as closely as possible the route of the 1932 air tour that was never completed due to the Depression.

Originally, the Friends of Meigs Field had expected to welcome the Air Tour to Chicago at Meigs Field, and offer the public an opportunity to view these marvelous flying machines "up close and personal."  Now, the best they will be able to do is to watch from the ground as the aircraft fly the length of the runway and drop flower petals in solidarity and hopes of a rapid reopening of the "Coolest Little Airport on the Planet."

Final schedule details will be posted on the Friends of Meigs website. Join the "Coolest Airport Support Group" and the Air Tour participants, and show your support of Meigs. in the Adler Planetarium parking lot north of Meigs Field.
