Missile Fired At French Plane In Chad

Rebel Leader Denies Incident

The French military reports one of its Breguet Atlantique 2 reconnaisance planes came under fire this week by a single ground-to-air missile as it overflew the eastern section Chad, where rebels hostile to the current political regime are active.

The French stress the twin turboprop plane (similar to type shown above) was never in any real danger during the incident Monday... but nevertheless, they do consider it a hostile fire situation as their plane was the only one in the sky at the time.

The Associated Press reports rebels hostile to the administration of French-backed President Idriss Deby Itno -- including army deserters, as well as relatives of the president -- are operating in the eastern portions of the former French colony, near the border with Sudan.

Curiously, the head of the primary rebel group in the area denied firing any missiles.
