Mobile Crew Fatigue Mitigation Functionality Designed To Increase Alertness
An improved version of CrewAlert, a mobile app for airline crew for fatigue risk management, has been introduced by Jeppesen. The enhanced CrewAlert app now is able to immediately calculate a strategy from hundreds of thousands of sleep patterns and light exposure combinations to increase crew alertness and overall flight safety.
Currently, airline crew are increasingly being trained in fatigue risk management as required by regulators worldwide. In addition to training in the basic science behind crew fatigue, the training also contains fatigue mitigation strategies. Such strategies have been designed for an average individual and are usually difficult to apply to a specific roster context given individual properties, time zone changes, departure times, and prior sleep/wake patterns.
Jeppesen is now simplifying the application of scientific principles to a specific crew roster context with the new functionality offered by CrewAlert. The new version contains built-in scientific mitigation strategies automatically calculated to fit to the roster and individual settings such as individual sleep requirements, commute times and more. With a simple tap on the app timeline, a strategy for boosting and maintaining alertness at that point in time is calculated within seconds, investigating up to 900,000 possible sleep patterns and light exposure combinations.
“It is important to keep in mind, although CrewAlert takes personal history and settings into account, that these mitigation strategies are tailored to a population of crew – just like the strategies taught in the normal training sessions,“ said Tomas Klemets, head of Scheduling Safety at Jeppesen. “CrewAlert now makes it so much easier to apply and adapt them to the airline roster – confirmed by the feedback from our test group of pilots over the past few months.”
CrewAlert is designed for airline crew, crew scheduling staff and flight safety departments. CrewAlert contains a wide range of functionality making it a suitable app for addressing the recommendations from ICAO on predictive, proactive and reactive fatigue risk capabilities. CrewAlert can be used for comparing and quantifying roster alternatives, predicting fatigue risk in upcoming duties, comparing sleep alternatives, collecting operational fatigue data, efficient fatigue reporting - and now also for determining suitable fatigue mitigation strategies.
