Gearbox May Be Factor In Hard Landing

NTSB Inspecting Maui Helo Tail Rotor

The National Transportation Safety Board is taking special interest in the tail rotor -- especially the gearbox -- of a Maui tour helicopter that made a hard landing March 28 at Kahului Airport.

The Eurocopter AS 350 BA, owned by MauiScape Helicopters Inc., was carrying seven people when the incident occurred during same month that two other tour helicopters crash-landed on Kaua'i, killing five people.

The AS 350 BA entered 'Iao Valley at the end of an hour-long sightseeing flight when the pilot encountered a problem with yaw, according to an NTSB preliminary report.

When the pilot realized he had no tail rotor control, he declared an emergency before landing on Runway 2. The helicopter sustained minor damage and no injuries were reported.

An FAA airworthiness inspector found a mounting tang in the tail rotor gearbox pitch-change bellcrank was fractured. The investigation continues.
