Concorde to Join Tu-144 in Germany

Retirement Means Making Museum's Collection Complete

There is only one place to go, to see the complete collection of the world's supersonic airliners: to Germany, and the Sinsheim Auto & Technik Museum.

Last week, F-BVFB, an Air France Concorde landed at nearby Baden-Baden, with veteran Jean-Louis Chatelain on the controls. In the back were over three dozen short-hop passengers, mostly Air France notables and friends.

At Baden-Baden, the Concorde will be prepared for a barge trip down the Rhine, to the museum. The decidedly-slower trip will not show off the sleek bird at her best: no nose, no wingtips, no tailcone. All those items had to come off, to make the aircraft manageable.

On the other hand, it will never fly again; the Museum plans to display it with her Iron Curtain sister, a Tu-144, that was retired in 1978.

F-BVFB is famous in her own right: she flew around the world in 1988, covering the 29,500+ miles in just over 38 hours. F-BVFB's clock shows a total of 14,771 hours, and nearly 5500 cycles.
