Experienced Skydiver Fatally Injured In Jump Accident

Collided With Another Skydiver, Who Survived

Hawaiian authorities say an experienced skydiver was fatally injured Sunday after a mid-air collision with another jumper.

Oahu

Ashley "Ash" White, an instructor with Skydive Hawaii which operates out of  Dillingham Airfield in Oahu, who had some 12,500 jumps in his logbook, did not survive the accident, according to the Associated Press.  The accident occurred about 0745 local time Sunday.

The other skydiver reportedly had a similar number of jumps to his credit. He was able to open his chute and land safely with only superficial injuries.

Skydive Hawaii owner Rick Hinshaw said that White was likely knocked unconscious by the collision, and that he was not using an automatically-opening emergency chute which might have made a difference. Hinshaw said the automatic devices are not required for experienced jumpers.
