Pilot Uninjured After Overshooting Clermont County Airport Runway

The pilot of a 1943 Curtiss Wright P-40M was uninjured after his airplane developed a mechanical problem in flight and attempted an emergency landing at Clermont County Municipal Airport (I69) in Batavia, OH.

The airplane is registered the the Tri-State Warbird Museum, according the the FAA registration database. The FAA's initial accident report indicates that the airplane ran off the end of the runway, through a fence, and onto a road.

Ohio State Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Wayne Price told television station WXIX that the flight had been the first for the P-40 since a recent restoration. The pilot reported the airplane experienced a mechanical problem at about 5,000 feet, and the cockpit filled with smoke.

The road on which the airplane eventually came to a stop was closed for about an hour while the airplane was cleared.
