NTSB: Spirit Airlines A319 Experienced Uncontained Engine Failure

Aircraft Landed Safely At DFW

A Spirit Airlines Airbus A319 en route to Atlanta from Dallas-Fort Worth International airport Tuesday suffered an "uncontained" engine failure shortly after takeoff, according to an unnamed official from the NTSB.

The airplane returned to DFW and landed safely, according to a report from the Associated Press.

The NTSB official requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the incident.

Spirit Airlines spokeswoman Misty Pinson said there were no injuries reported from the incident. The captain received an indication of a "possible mechanical issue" shortly after takeoff, Pinson said. She said the airline is "actively investigating to confirm the specifics of what happened and the cause."

A passenger told the Associated Press that he heard an explosion and saw flames come up the side of the airplane, illuminating the interior of the aircraft. He and other passengers said smoke filled the cabin.

The passengers were placed on another flight to Atlanta. The NTSB recalled furloughed investigators to begin the process of determining the cause of the incident. The FAA will also be involved in the investigation.
