Paul Tibbets' Grandson Will Command B-2 Unit

Brig. Gen. Paul W. Tibbets IV To Lead 509th Bomber Wing

There is a new commanding officer for the 509th Bomber Wing ... the Air Force's B-2 nuclear bomber unit ... and it's someone with a family history in that arena.

The new commander is Brig. Gen. Paul W. Tibbets IV, the grandson of the pilot of Enola Gay. The elder Tibbets flew the mission that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6th, 1945.

Paul W. Tibbets IV achieved the rank of brigadier general last summer. He is currently the deputy director of nuclear operations for U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. The Air Force Times reports that Tibbets is one of only a handful of USAF pilots to have flown all three strategic bombers in the Air Force's inventory; the B-52, the B-1, and the B-2.
