Fire in One, Shut Down Both: Malaga Crash

Pilot Error Main Cause of Binter CN-235 Crash: Report

Human error main cause of plane crash in Spain, black box data indicates Mon May 27,12:05 PM ET ("CN-235 Goes Down in Spain," 08-30-01, ANN)

On Monday, the CVR (cockpit voice recorder) from a Binter Mediterraneo CASA CN-235 flight revealed that it was the copilot who may have been the proximate cause of the crash.
According to reports, co-pilot Luis Checa saw on the annunciator panel that one of the engines was on fire; he switched them both off, and didn't make the last 500 to 700 feet it would have taken, to achieve the runway at Malaga, Spain. The plane landed short, and three people were killed.
The flight, to Malaga's Pedro Ruiz Picasso Airport, from Melilla, Morocco, carried 44 passengers and three crew. Six families have now engaged a lawyer.
