Russia Conducts Hypersonic Missile Test

Releases Defense Ministry Video Of Kinzhal Missile Firing

The Russian Defense Ministry has released a video that it says shows the successful test of a Kinzhal hypersonic missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

The BBC reports that, according to the Russian government, the missile is capable of traveling at Mach 10 with a range of about 1,200 miles. "The launch went according to plan, the hypersonic missile hit its target," the ministry said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 1 announced that the missile is part of an "invincible" weapons stockpile. In his annual State of the Nation speech he showed a video that seemed to show missiles hitting targets in Florida.

The missile was reportedly launched from a MiG-31 aircraft flying out of an airfield in southwest Russia on Saturday.

Responding to the speech, the U.S. State Department said that Putin's actions are not "the behaviour of a responsible international player."
