Airborne 12.05.16: AutoGyro Certified, Police Seize Drone, GoPro Job Cuts

Also: Aldrin Evacuated, Shark US, Lufthansa, NASA, ESA's New Orbiter, FLIR Systems, Esterline

The expression, “breaking news,” seems to be highly overused nowadays, but to hear that an autogyro has just received FAA type certification is truly - breaking news.

Even better, this aircraft is eligible for operation by sport pilots. The original design of the Calidus dates back to 2009. Since then it has been certified in numerous countries around the world. The company claims cruise performance to be in the range of 95 to 110 miles per hour with a takeoff distance ranging from 30-300 feet. A Sacramento man who flew his DJI Mavic drone over the Winter Wonderland festival at California Exposition last month had his aircraft confiscated by the Sacramento Police. Television station KXTV reports that Mark Munn had attended the festival with his family, and said he wanted to go back to capture an aerial view of the lights at the festival. But on November 21, the video he captured, along with the $1,500 aircraft, were confiscated by the police. GoPro has announced a company-wide restructuring that will reduce full-year 2017 operating expenses to approximately $650 million and achieve its goal of returning to profitability in 2017. The restructuring includes the closure of its entertainment division, facilities reductions, and the elimination of more than 200 full-time positions plus the cancellation of open positions for a reduction in force of approximately 15 percent. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
