Drone Operator Arrested In Pacifica, CA

Accused Of Flying His Aircraft Near A Helicopter Conducting A Rescue Operation

A drone operator has been arrested and charged with flying his aircraft near a California Highway Patrol helicopter that was engaged in a rescue operation.

The Mercury News reports that the rescue occurred Friday night at about 10:15 local time. The North County Fire Authority and Pacifica (CA) Police Department responded to a report of a person who had fallen off a cliff.

A medic was lowered onto the beach to check on the person's condition and prepare him for a long-line rescue.

The CHP dispatched a helicopter for the lift. When it arrived on the scene, the crew says they noticed the drone flying close to the helo. The rescue operation was suspended temporarily.

Police located the drone operator, identified as 55-year-old Pacifica resident Gerald Destremps. He was arrested on a charge of impeding first responders at the scene of an emergency.
