MD Helicopters Delivers MD 500E Helicopter To Bering Air

New Helicopter To Expand Capabilities For Alaskan Utility Missions

Nome, Alaska-based Bering Air has taken delivery of a new MD 500E helicopter, which will provide support for the construction of microwave Internet towers and operate charters in the mineral exploration fields, as well as assist in animal survey and capture work for customers such as the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Bering Air is one of the largest rotary wing fleet operators in Western Alaska. “The 500E delivers the highest speed, payload and productivity in its class,” said Lynn Tilton, Chief Executive Officer of MDHI. “This aircraft is an excellent addition to Bering Air’s fleet as the company expands its offering to include greater utility and arctic operation capability.”

Bering Air is the latest MDHI customer to utilize the MD 500E for demanding missions in harsh environmental conditions. In Alaska, weather forces flights traveling north of 60 degrees latitude to require the use of aircraft propelled by kerosene based fuels such as Jet A. “Arctic operations are remote and require the dependability MD Helicopters provide,” said Russell Rowe, chief helicopter pilot of Bering Air. “The MD 500E ensures safe and reliable transportation of heavy equipment and our most valuable asset - our employees.”

According to Bering Air, the new MD 500E will double its hook lifting capacity to 1,200 pounds, while offering decreased cycle time and overall hours flown. The company estimates the new helicopter will fly approximately 500 hours annually. The MD 500E is Bering Air’s third MD aircraft.
