Swearingen Turboprop Goes Down At Teterboro

Pilot Rushed To Hospital, In "Fair" Condition

For the third time this year, a general aviation aircraft went down at New Jersey's Teterboro Airport, injuring the pilot who was alone on board.

The SA226T Merlin was on approach to TEB, according to witnesses, when it began to "sound odd." Authorities said the pilot reported engine problems.

"They saw the plane banking back and forth, left and right, as it was landing," Bill Stevick, general manager of United Show Case, Inc., told WINS Radio News. United Show Case is a business located across the street from the runway.

As the aircraft touched down, one wing dug into the ground and the aircraft ground-looped, he said. "It actually tore the right wing off."

Airport operations were suspended for more than three hours after the mishap, according to authorities.

The pilot of the aircraft was taken to a local hospital where authorities said he was in "fair" condition.

As ANN reported last March, a Hawker bizjet slid off the end of the runway after landing, winding up in the mud about 250 feet from the end of the strip at TEB. That was about a month after a Challenger 600 overran the end of the runway and rammed into a warehouse across a busy highway. In all, some 20 people were hurt.
