Airborne 08.23.21: Pipistrel War!, Model Politics, MQ-25 Milestone

Also: Flights Over Afghanistan, IFR-Variant AW119Kx, Virtual PPL Ground School, New Shepard’s 17th Flight

Boy, do we have some drama to tell you… just days after Oshkosh. Pipistrel Aircraft Boss Ivo Boscarol, of Slovenia, has pulled the plug on his long-time contract and distributorship agreement with Michael Coates' Pipistrel-USA organization within days after Coates completed his participation and financing of an extensive display at Oshkosh.

Both sides dispute the other, and ANN has waded in to determine whatever truth can be derived from the facts we are gathering -- at the request of a number of parties... The former mutual agreement between the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (MAAC) and AMA is no longer in effect because of the recent changes in the country’s Canadian Aviation Regulation (Canada’s counterpart to the FAA) Part IX and the exemption granted to MAAC and its members. In order to fly model aircraft in Canada as a US resident, you must have a MAAC membership. There are two options to join MAAC. You can purchase a temporary 90-day foreign membership for $40 CAD or a full membership for $80 CAD. At this time, AMA is not requiring MAAC members to join AMA to fly at their fields and events. The US Navy has completed a second carrier-based aircraft unmanned refueling mission with the Boeing-owned MQ-25TM T1 test asset, this time refueling a Navy E-2D Hawkeye command and control aircraft. During a test flight from MidAmerica St. Louis Airport on Aug. 18, pilots from the Navy’s Air Test and Evaluation Squadron VX-20 conducted a successful wake survey behind MQ-25 T1 to ensure performance and stability before making contact with T1’s aerial refueling drogue. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
