In this video, ANN talks with Rand Vollmer, the owner of Salsa Aviation which is a Pipistrel dealer. Vollmer introduces us to the Pipistrel Virus (pronounced as vearus) Motor-Glider.
The interesting thing about the Pipistrel Virus is that it can be certified as a motor-glider or as an airplane. If certified as a motor-glider, the pilot must be glider pilot rated but does not need an FAA medical certificate.
Another term for a motor-glider is to call it a self-launching glider. This means that once you have climbed to altitude you may intentionally shut down the engine. However, you don’t have to switch off the engine. The 24 gallons of fuel gives the Virus a range of about 900 miles. With this airplane you can take a long flight or soar with the birds; it’s your choice. This video gives you good insight to the world of powered gliders.
