Jackson Hole Airport To Buy Jackson Hole Aviation

Wyoming Jet Center Shut Out By The Move

The Jackson Hole Airport board voted unanimously Wednesday to purchase the assets of Jackson Hole Aviation, which means there will not be a competing FBO at the airport.

The Jackson Hole News and Guide reports that consultants told the board that purchasing the business will avoid redundancies and save space at the airport, as well as provide a revenue stream. While board member Jerry Blann said he normally would not support such a move, favoring the private sector and competition, the purchase is in the best interest of the airport.

To make the purchase, the board exercised a "proprietary exclusive' clause in FAA regulations that normally mandate competition at airports that receive federal grants.

The deal means that Wyoming Jet Center, which had applied to open a competing FBO at the airport, will not be doing so. The airport had wanted to keep its options open for other applicants, and Jackson Hole Aviation approached them about buying the business while an RFP was being prepared.

The deal will be finalized on May 1, 2018. The FBO will mean some $25 to $30 million in revenue to the airport. Airport Director Jim Ellwood said that he expects to have a return on the investment within five years.

All 36 Jackson Hole Aviation employees are expected to keep their jobs. The current owner will be relieved of his duties, but will likely be a consultant to the airport going forward.
