O'Hare Flight Cap Could Be Extended

Blakey Hopes It's Voluntary...

By all accounts, FAA Administrator Marion Blakey is downright pleased with the way the cap on arrivals and departures is working out at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

"I'd like to think the current agreement will be so successful that everyone will want to move forward with a voluntary extension. That would be a desirable outcome," she told reporters in Washington.

United and American, which together control 86-percent of the flights in and out of O'Hare, agreed in March to reduce operations by five-percent during peak times. In June, they agreed to another 2.5 percent. Last month, they both agreed to six-percent reductions between 1200 and 2000 from November 1st through April 30th.

So how are the voluntary measures working so far? The FAA says it's seeing a slight reduction in flight delays at O'Hare as a result of the agreement.

"Without them, delays this summer would have been significantly worse," Blakey said.
