Ford Patents Drone To Be Deployed From Car's Trunk

Touted As A Safety Device In The Patent Application

Ford Motor Company has been granted a patent for a drone to be stored and deployed in the trunk of its cars, according to an application published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office.

The website Futurism.com reports that the patent is for a quadcopter-type drone that would be deployed by a vehicle's onboard computer in the event of an emergency. For example, if the vehicle runs out of gas or is involved in an accident, the drone would hover above the car and shine a spotlight to alert other drivers to the disabled vehicle. It could also sound an audible alarm, making the car easier for first responders to locate. It could also stream real-time video to the owners phone if they have to abandon the vehicle.

The patent application was first filed in 2016. It is not known if the system will ever be installed in any of the automakers vehicles.
