Delta Recall

Troubled Airline Plans To Bring Back More Than 1,000

Financially-troubled Delta Airlines is about to recall 1,060 pilots laid off in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Traffic is that good.

"We will be meeting this week to determine the timing and the pace and the logistics of this," Delta spokesman John Kennedy said.

For the first four months of 2004, Delta's passenger load barely exceeded pre-9/11 levels. They were laid off in spite of an agreement reached the summer before 9/11 that forbade the airline from putting pilots on furlough.

Talks between Delta and the ALPA over pay cuts the airline says it needs to stay in the sky have stalled. The airline wants the country's highest-paid pilots to agree to a 30-percent reduction in wages and benefits. Delta pilots have offered only nine-percent.
