Comair FO Off Respirator, Asking Questions

Has Not Mentioned Memories Of Accident

"Why?" That is the heartbreaking question asked by James Polehinke, the sole survivor of the August 27 crash of a Comair CRJ-100 in Lexington, KY, after he regained consciousness last week.

A close friend of the family told the Louisville Courier-Journal Polehinke hasn't mentioned the crash... and those keeping watch over him as he begins the long, slow path to recovery have been instructed not to say anything about it.

As Aero-News reported, the 44-year-old first officer was at the controls of the regional jet as it attempted to take off from the shorter of two runways at Blue Grass Airport. Polehinke suffered a collapsed lung and several of broken bones in the accident -- including fractures to his face, spine, leg, foot, hand, ribs and breastbone.

It is unclear whether Polehinke will ever remember any details of the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 49 people onboard the RJ... and for the moment, that is not the primary concern to those around him.

"Why did God do this to me?" Polehinke asked, one of the first full sentences spoken by the man after he awakened from the coma he was in since the accident, according to family members.

His mother replied... "It was not God. It was just an accident."
