Skydivers Collide About 200 Feet Above The Ground

Two Fatally Injured After Parachutes Collapse

Two skydivers jumping near Eloy, AZ Tuesday collided in midair resulting in their fatal injury.

The parachutes of the two skydivers collapsed, according to a report from the Arizona Republic. One died at the scene, and a second was transported to a nearby hospital where the person was declared dead. A third person taking part in the jump but not involved in the collision was also injured, and was taken to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. Their condition was not reported.

The jumpers had been participating in a week-long event called Square 1 World Sequential Series '13 that gathered 200 participants from around the world. The event's website said they would be trying to establish "as many new official world sequential records as we can" by Friday.

Eloy police Sgt. Brian Jerome said that it was not yet known why the jumpers collided in mid-air, and participants in the event were being interviewed.

USA Today reports that the event continued as planned despite the fatalities. Neither person fatally injured was said to be an American, but authorities did not release their home countries.
