Airbus, Hong Kong Airlines Finalize A380 Deal

Superjumbos Had Gotten Tied Up In EU-ETS Flap

The Chinese government has cleared the way for Hong Kong Airlines to complete its purchase of ten A380 airliners in a deal worth about $3.8 billion. The deal had been up in the air because of the European Union's imposition of its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

While Airbus says it will have no official comment on the deal until its annual news conference on January 17th, the French news service AFP reports that, according to Bloomberg, the first deliveries to the Chinese airline would be sometime in 2015.

The Chinese government had considered blocking the acquisition as a protest of the imposition January 1st by the European Union of an Emissions Trading Scheme which requires non-European flagged airlines to purchase carbon credits if they don't meet strict emissions guidelines.

The airline also would not comment on the reported purchase.
