Rolls-Royce Starts Final Assembly Of Trent XWB Production Engine

Entry Into Service Expected Later This Year With Qatar Airways

Rolls-Royce has started final assembly of the first production Trent XWB that will power the first A350 XWB into commercial service with Qatar Airways later in 2014. The Trent XWB, specifically designed for the aircraft, is the largest-selling Trent engine ever with more than 1,600 already sold.

The engine is currently powering the aircraft on a variety of test flights that have recently included high altitude testing in Bolivia and cold weather testing in Iqualit, Canada, and powered the A350 XWB's visit to Singapore Airshow.

Chris Young, Rolls-Royce, Trent XWB Program Director, said: "Starting final assembly of the first Trent XWB to go into service with Qatar Airways is an important milestone and the beginning of an exciting journey for the engine this year. The development program has been very robust and on schedule all the way."

The engine powered the A350 XWB's first test flight in June 2013.

Rolls-Royce says the Trent XWB is 16 per cent more efficient than the first-generation Trent engines that entered into service in 1995. Qatar Airways is the launch customer for the A350 XWB and has ordered 80 of the aircraft, including 43 A350-900s and 37 A350-1000s.
