Eight Fatally Injured In Romanian Helicopter Accident

Two Survived When The IAR-330 Puma Went Down

Eight NATO service members were fatally injured Friday when the Romanian-build IAR-330 Puma helicopter they were aboard went down during a training exercise.

The Romanian Defense Ministry said the aircraft went down about 0840 GMT, and that two of the 10 people on board the aircraft survived but were badly burned.

All 10 were station at a military airbase in Central Romania, according to a report from Reuters.

In a statement released Friday, U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel offered his "deepest condolences to the families of the eight Romanian service members who lost their lives in a helicopter crash ... while en route to a joint exercise with U.S. forces.

"Since joining NATO a decade ago, Romania has been a stalwart ally and partner of the United States, and the American military deeply appreciates the dedication and sacrifices of Romanian troops who have served alongside U.S. forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Europe. As we mourn this loss, we reaffirm our commitment to defending our shared interests and values, and to strengthening our collective defense. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen, their loved ones, and the Romanian people."

Hagle resigned as Secretary of Defense on Monday. He said he would remain in the position until a replacement is confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
