Gone West: Tuskegee Airman Calvin Spann

Veteran Of 26 Combat Missions Dies At 90

Another of the Tuskegee Airmen has Gone West. The family of 90-year-old Calvin Spann confirmed that he passed away Sunday at his home in Texas.

Television station KVUE reports that Spann flew 26 combat missions while serving with the segregated unit. Among them was a 1,600-mile round trip from Remitelli, Italy to Berlin, where bombers he was escorting destroyed the Daimler-Benz manufacturing plant. It was called the "longest bomber escort mission," according to the Frontiers of Flight Museum located at Love Field in Dallas.

According to Wikipedia, Spann achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant, and was honored with the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, a Presidential Unit Citation, and was among those Tuskegee Airmen to be presented the Congressional Gold Medal in 2006.
