Cubcrafters Tried To Convince Some Workers To Move North
Mooney appears to be up and operating again in Kerrville, TX, as cars filled the parking lot Monday morning following a furlough that lasted about a month.
The Kerrville Daily Times reports that company representative Devan Burns said in an email that the furlough was lifted and "Mooney has resumed operations in Kerrville. At this time, there are negotiations with an additional investor."
The paper reports that Mooney has been located in Kerrville since 1953. But sales have fallen to only about 20 airplanes a year since 2008, and there have been 11 owners and multiple bankruptcies in the company's history.
But while Mooney's employees were sitting at home on furlough, at least one light airplane manufacturer tried to get some to join its team in Yakima, WA. The Daily Times reports that Cubcrafters posted targeted messages on Facebook inviting "any of the recently laid-off workers from the Mooney plant in Kerrville to think about joining our company.”
While Cubcrafters builds a very different airplane than does Mooney, they sold about twice as many airplanes last year than the Kerrville company did.
“We know that the workers recently employed by Mooney Aircraft in Kerrville, and are, dedicated to those very same core values of excellence that we share,” Cubcrafters said on Facebook.
But with the furlough lifted, it would appear that Mooney will not have to pull up stakes and move to Washington State ... at least for now.
