Teenager Rescued From Burning Airplane Following Detroit Accident

Cessna 210 Went Down In A Vacant Lot, Two Fatally Injured

A teenager who was aboard a Cessna 210 that went down near Coleman A. Young airport in Detroit Sunday was pulled from the burning wreckage of the airplane by neighbors who witnessed the accident. Two other people on board the airplane were fatally injured.

According to the Detroit News, the pilot of the plane reported he was low on fuel and had landing gear issues prior to the accident. The plane was headed to the airport when it went down in a vacant, grassy lot about a mile short of the airport.

Neighbors who witnessed the accident rushed to the scene, and one person used an axe to break a window and pull the passenger, a 17-year-old male, out of the burning wreckage. He was hospitalized in critical condition, according to the report. The FAA said that the plane was destroyed by the post-impact fire.

FAA spokesman Lynn lunsford said that the pilot "had reported a landing gear problem and low fuel to air traffic controllers shortly before the accident.”
