Texas Transportation Authorities Hopes Tree-Trimming Will Satisfy FAA

Trees Considered A Safety Hazard At Gillespie County Airport

Texas DOT aviation officials are set to inspect tree-trimming work done this week at Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course in Texas after the FAA had ruled that the trees were a safety hazard in an expanded landing cone for night instrument operations at Gillespie County Airport.

The city of Fredericksburg, which owns the golf course, and Gillespie county, which has jurisdiction over the airport, had negotiated for half a year over avigation easement rights, and who would pay to have the trees trimmed. The county finally agreed to pay the city $550,000 over two years for the work, and an easement was formally signed last Thursday.

The Fredericksburg Standard Radio Post reports that six trees on the golf course, along with one on private property, were trimmed earlier in the week. The work must now be inspected to determine if the trees no longer pose a safety hazard to pilots making instrument approaches at night.
