Free ASF Runway Safety Flash Cards Popular With CFIs, Pilots

The new FAA requirements for runway safety education on checkrides or proficiency flights have prompted pilots in record numbers to take advantage of the AOPA Air Safety Foundation's free runway safety flash cards.

In the last year, about 8,500 pilots, CFIs, and designated examiners have read or downloaded the cards, each of which displays a close-up of a runway sign or marking, with a full explanation on the other side. They are used for learning or reinforcing runway sign knowledge, which is now required on all FAA private or commercial pilot checkrides, and encouraged as a subject area on flight reviews. Some FAA designated examiners are using the cards on checkrides, as a way to check applicant's knowledge without having to extend the checkride to find appropriate signs and markings.

The cards are available for online viewing or download as a PowerPoint show, or in PDF format for printing on paper or card stock with any home printer.

Statistics for the past 12 months also show pilots enthusiastically embracing ASF's free interactive online courses. More than 25,000 pilots completed the two most popular courses, "Know Before You Go" on avoiding TFR incursions, and "Single-Pilot IFR." Six full interactive courses are now available, and each offers a handsome graduation certificate and qualifies for FAA "Wings" program safety credit.

All ASF safety seminars and most online products are free and available to all pilots, supported by generous donations from pilots and companies interested in promoting aviation safety.
