Plane Diverted When Captain Was Locked Out Of The Cockpit

Door To The Front Office Jammed While Pilot Took A Bio-Break

It's one of those things you might think about as the front door to your house or a hotel room door closes and locks ... can I get back in? But it's probably not the first thing that the captain of an airliner should have to be concerned about. There's somebody else in the cockpit.

But that was not the case on a recent Air India flight. The captain stepped out to visit the lavatory. But when he tried to get back into the cockpit of the plane, the door was jammed. Even the co-pilot inside the cockpit was unable to open the door to let him get back to work.

The problem caused the plane, which was en route to Bangalore from New Delhi, to divert to Bhopal, the nearest airport, according to a report from the Associated Press. Air India said in a statement that “The co-pilot, after taking permission ... diverted the flight to Bhopal and landed…at 17:55 hrs,” according to a report relayed by the BBC.

The statement indicated that the passengers on the plane, the make and model of which was not mentioned in the report, were never in any danger. The door was fixed by a ground crew in Bhopal, and the flight continued without further incident.
