ASD Report Shows Market Fragmented, Many Smaller Start-Ups
A new analysis of the leading companies in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) market indicates that while the UAV market is currently dominated by two US companies: General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and Northrop Grumman Corporation, the UAV market is also highly fragmented with numerous small companies developing innovative platforms. As the market matures, the dominance of US and Israeli competitors will be gradually eroded.
The report profiles 20 selected companies in the market who threaten to challenge established market leaders.
According to the report, the leading 20 companies in the UAV market currently control a significant proportion of total global market revenues. However, incumbent positions are increasingly under threat from new and existing competitors offering a range of cost-effective UAV capabilities and innovative technologies.
Improvements in payload technologies, especially size, weight and power considerations will be critical drivers of growth and innovation in UAV platforms. This will facilitate the development of UAV platforms designed for specific mission profiles as well as opening up new markets for unmanned systems.
The most significant future development will unquestionably be the gradual loosening of restrictions governing the commercial use of UAS. This will represent both an opportunity and a threat to existing leading companies in the market who will be forced to adapt to potentially radically different market dynamics.
