Gone West: VW Engine Guru Steve Bennett

Passed Away After A Long Battle With Cancer

ANN received word over the weekend that Steve Bennett, a past president of EAA Chapter 80 in Omaha, NE, has passed away following what was described as a "long battle with cancer."

The notice was posted on the EAA Chapter 80 website, but few other details are available.

Bennett was known as one of the leaders in converting VW engines for use in aircraft. He founded Great Plains Aircraft Supply Company in Afton, OK, which offers an extensive line of VW based engine parts, accessory kits, and individual engine parts for VW powered sport aircraft. According to Wikipedia, the company has been selling and manufacturing conversions of VW engines for aircraft since 1982.

Bennett was also the author of the book "VW Aircraft Engine Assembly."

According to the EAA Chapter 80 website, services for Bennett may be delayed "for a week or two" so that his out of town friends can attend.
