UN Helicopters Leave Iraq

Insurers Won't Cover 'Em Anymore

The UN's ability to fly weapons inspectors around Iraq is greatly dimished today, after five of the eight choppers in the fleet were flown out of Baghdad yesterday. Iraqi officials said their insurance had been abruptly canceled in advance of an increasingly likely US-led invasion.

Where's A Spokesman When You Need One?

UN spokesman Hiro Ueki, in Baghdad, could not immediately be reached for comment on the departure of the world body's air fleet to Syria en route to Cyprus.

The aircraft have been used by the inspectors since January to travel across Iraq to visit sites suspected of involvement in the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction.

Among those that left were US-made Bell-212 helicopters. Three others, still on the ground Sunday night, are Russian-made Mi-8s (above), which are insured by another company and would continue to be used in the inspections, according to a statement by the National Monitoring Directorate, the Iraqi state agency that liaises with the inspectors.
