Two Fatally Injured In Apache Accident

Pair Was Traveling To Antique Aircraft Show In Iowa

An accident involving a 1959 PA-23-150 Apache just southwest of Canton, MO, has resulted in the fatal injury of two men traveling to Iowa for an antique airplane show.

The airplane went down Wednesday about 0920 local time, according to authorities. Those on board are reported to be 74-year-old John R. Johnson of Carbondale, IL, and Carl s. Maiden, 47, from DuQuoin, IL. Johnson is believed to have been the owner of the aircraft.

Local news sources including the Quincy (IL) Herald-Whig and television station KHQA indicate that the men were traveling to the Blakesburg Fly-In planned for August 29 to September 3. The gathering is held annually in Wapello County, IA, and sponsored by the Antique Airplane Association. The plane went down in a pasture surrounded by tall trees in Lewis County, MO.

Photos of the accident show the aircraft lying on its side the both wings separated from the fuselage. There is no indication of a post-impact fire. The pilot reportedly did not declare an emergency prior to the accident, which occurred about 10 miles from Lewis County Regional Airport. There is no record of radio transmissions from the airplane before it went down.
