Oversize Cargo Transportation Airline Begins Operation for Use Around the World
Bespoke, large cargo demands around the world, can now be shipped via the unique Airbus BelugaST fleet.
The international makeup of the company has brought considerable requirements for ferry flights of outsize cargo to produce some of the biggest Airbus aircraft, which have led to the creation of 5 A300-600 BelugaSTs. The Belugas have been the backbone of the aerial transport system for airbus, flying missions that would be impossible to fit in any other aircraft. The aircraft have flown entire intact helicopters, 10-foot by 12-foot historical artworks, and large satellites too sensitive for ground shipment.
The current fleet of BelugaST aircraft will soon be replaced by an even bigger replacement, the BelugaXL, and be placed under an all new subsidiary airline. The move away from individually chartered cargo flights will allow a greatly improved throughput for customer flights, as the entirety of the BelugaST fleet can be put to work for clients around the world. In years past, demand often far outstripped the flight hours available, as Airbus naturally put priority on those missions that contributed to the work of aircraft production.
Cargo up to 23'x 22' can be carried aboard the BelugaST, and operations have already begun. The new line will see improved and revamped loading equipment developed for faster turnaround and flight preparation, including an on-board cargo loading platform for use when arriving at airports without suitable facilities for unloading.
The new head of the Airbus Transport International, said “The Beluga’s wider cross-section will open up new markets and new logistical possibilities for customers. In the case of loading helicopters - not having to dismantle them first - really is a plus. Similarly, the largest commercial aircraft engines can be accommodated in a fully-dressed configuration.”
