NBAA Awards Five UAA Janice K. Barden Aviation Scholarships

Recipients Involved In Subjects Ranging From Commercial Aviation To FAA Research

Five college students studying aviation-related curricula at National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) and University Aviation Association (UAA) member institutions have received 2010 UAA Janice K. Barden Aviation Scholarship awards totaling $5,000.

The scholarship is named for Aviation Personnel International founder Janice K. Barden, who has been active in the aviation community for decades and has served many times as the Local Committee chair of NBAA's Annual Meeting & Convention. The 2010 recipients were recognized on October 20 during the NBAA 63rd Annual Meeting & Convention in Atlanta, GA.

The recipients of the 2010 Barden Scholarships are:

  • Erin Coulter is a senior at the University of North Dakota majoring in commercial aviation. When she graduates, she wants to pursue owning and operating a seaplane base in Alaska.
  • Trevor Halvorson is a senior at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University majoring in professional aeronautics. He is a graduate of St. Philip's College Airframe and Powerplant Program and is pursuing a Certified Aviation Manager (CAM) certificate through NBAA.
  • Jared Platt is a junior majoring in professional aeronautics at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. He is interested in a business aviation career, having worked as an aircraft dispatcher and line service technician for two different FBOs in addition to being a commercial pilot for a regional airline.
  • Austin Roberts is a senior at Western Michigan University pursuing a degree in aviation flight science. His ideal job would be to work with a large company flying a smaller aircraft into rural airfields around the country.
  • Zachary Waller is a junior studying unmanned aircraft systems at the University of North Dakota (UND). He has been involved with gathering research for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) by operating CropCAM, a small UAV owned by the university. He will graduate in the first class of unmanned aircraft majors from UND.
