AeroSports Update: Ultralight Day At Pioneer Airport

June 20th Will Sound Like A Convention Of Weed Eaters At Pioneer Airport

EAA’s Pioneer Airport will be transformed into a fun fly zone on Saturday, June 20, as up to two dozen ultralights and light planes descend onto the grass airstrip to participate in EAA’s Ultralight Day 2015.

As part of the event, invited members of EAA Ultralight Chapter 1 (Southern, WI), Chapter 75 (North Central, WI), and Chapter 1331 (Central, WI) will use special procedures to fly their ultralights and light planes to Pioneer Airport in two mass arrivals between 9-10 a.m., weather permitting. Beginning at 1 p.m., pilots will conduct several pilot proficiency events, which include accuracy landings, bean bag drops, and torpedo run contests. Any competitor who scores in the top three of each event will receive a special plaque.

“This will be a great opportunity for anyone visiting the EAA AirVenture Museum to see up close and learn more about this fun, affordable segment of aviation,” said Timm Bogenhagen, EAA ultralight & light-plane community manager. “Affordable fun is the core of this kind of flying.”

These unique flying machines will vary in style and design, ranging in types from powered parachutes to traditional fixed wing aircraft.

Anyone who wants to have a fun afternoon learning about this unique segment of flight may attend Ultralight Day. Aircraft rides will be available for purchase from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and lunch will be available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission to the activities is included with regular museum admission for non-EAA members, and is free for EAA members.

And remember, if you’re interested in ultralights but cannot make it to this event, you’ll find lots of ultralight action at the ultralight airstrip during EAA AirVenture 2015.
