Virginia Aviation Museum Wins Tax Relief From City Council

Owner Exempt From Real Estate, Personal Property Taxes

The Virginia Beach, VA City Council last week voted 8-1 to waive real estate and personal property taxes for the Military Aviation Museum. That tax bill was estimated to be over $81,000 this year.

The Virginian Pilot reports that owner Jerry Yagen may still owe about $9,300 in back taxes not collected because the city had not sent him a tax bill for the aircraft housed at the museum. Yagen had at one point put the airplanes up for sale.

Yagen is the owner of Training Services Inc., which owns the 57 vintage airplanes housed, displayed and flown by the museum. The city council vote means that Yagen will not have to pay personal property taxes on the warbirds. The only "no" vote came from Councilwoman Barbara Henley, who said there was a safety issue with the planes flying over the homes of people who live near the museum. Other council members said that was an issue for the planning board, not a tax consideration.
