Airborne 06.14.16: Sporty's Online FIRC, Glacier Landing, Icon 'Puffery'

Sporty’s Pilot Shop has developed what they say is a fresh new option for flight instructors looking to renew their CFI certificate, using a modern online learning system.

They call it their ‘eFIRC’. They say, because the 16 hour course may be completed up to three months before and actual CFI expiration date, this home study course can be spread out to make it convenient for the CFI. The course’s 17 lessons do not have to be completed in any specific order. Each course lessons ends with an exam which prepares the instructor for the final exam. Sporty says their eFIRC was developed from scratch with today’s modern CFI in mind so users learn about topics pertinent to today’s flight training environment. A pilot with two passengers on board was flying from Pitt Meadows to Whistler in Canada last week when he made a wrong turn into a mountain valley and found himself unable to turn or climb the airplane to get out of a narrow canyon. Pilot, Vern Hannah, managed to stay airborne long enough to put the airplane down on the Pemberton icefield. The 1963 Beech Musketeer suffered damage but the occupants were uninjured. ANN CEO and Editor-In-Chief, Jim Campbell, works hard in his efforts to promote aviation. Jim, and all of us at ANN, know that GA has had it rough over the last few years, and we believe it’s a shame when a company like Icon Aircraft takes advantage of the masses who are not knowledgeable about aviation to promote themselves. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
